Stands Scotland where she did? The answer – as Neat's screen prints suggest – is both yes and no. But this exhibition makes it clear that Neat, and the marvellous friends with whom he has worked, have played a significant role in shaping the process by which 'poetry has become people' in our greatly changed nation. In the House of Scotland are many Mansions. These works, these artists show us how Scotland can be again a light to all nations. This exhibition expands the very idea of what art is. This unusual and fascinating exhibition draws together the multifarious strands of Timothy Neat's creative life. In doing this is it throws dramatic light on an array of characters and ideas that have shaped the culture of Scotland over the last fifty years. Neat's friend Hamish Henderson stated that 'the politics follows the culture': here we can see that process in action.

Neat is a writer, filmmaker, artist, and teacher who delights in collaboration. This exhibition presents his work with, Robert Burns, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald; Hugh MacDiarmid, Margaret Gardiner, Sorley MacLean, Hamish Henderson, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Jean Redpath, Jack Knox, Will MacLean and John Berger. Neat is an impelled and highly original artist himself; interested in ideas, the process of collaboration, art as service to society in general, and in culture as a living reality. On these walls we find the Scots Travelling People, Highland Crofters, forgotten bards, letters to the press, beautiful envelopes.

This Retrospective, Neat's first exhibition in a gallery space, presents photographs, drawings, paintings, screen prints, pottery, films, books, correspondence and archival objects of many kinds. It is divided into two sections.

Reception Gallery:
On leaving school in 1963 Neat hitchhiked to Spain to work at a Student work Camp. These photographs document the village of Cortes de la Frontera, in Andalucia. (Printing by Robin Bell of London.)

A video presentation of recent pen and ink drawings by Neat (36 self-portraits and 336 portraits), all from sketchbooks filled since 2011.

Vitrine Display
The vitrine in the centre of the room presents three issues of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art magazine 'Seer', edited by Neat and students, in Dundee (1977/80). Ideas and imagery here anticipates much of this exhibition, 35 years later.

Screen Prints
A suite of 13 screen prints especially commissioned by Peacock Visual Arts for this Retrospective. Entitled 'A Baker's Dozen: Twelve Stations of the Cross of Scotland', these were printed at Peacock in September 2013.

Neat is a self-taught potter. Three items were made in 1965, the rest in 2012/13 (acknowledgements to Forgan Arts Centre and George Young).

Robert Burns
In 1986 Neat made a major documentary film, ‘The Tree of Liberty – the Songs of Robert Burns, sung by Jean Redpath, Researched and Arranged by Serge Hovey'. It affirmed Neat's closeness to the national poet of Scotland.

Margaret MacDonald Charles Rennie Mackintosh
As an art historian Neat began in depth research of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow Four in 1977. In 1994, Neat's seminal study, ‘Part Seen Part Imagined – Meaning and Symbolism in the Work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh' was published. In 2002, his biography of the Mackintosh scholar ‘Closing the Circle - Thomas Howarth, Mackintosh and the Modern Movement' was published.

Ancestors and Youth
Wordsworth's words, 'The child is father to the man', seem especially relevant to Neat. Brought up in an isolated farming community in Cornwall he learned a good deal about ancestry from his mother, and the world from Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopeadia. Ancient and Modern, Art and Science, Nature and Politics were all part of a single reality. Born a product of both the First and the Second World Wars he has stood all his life against imperialism and the glorification of killing.

Hugh MacDiarmid
In 1976 Neat began a correspondence with MacDiarmid. After the poet's death, in 1978, as convenor of the Scottish Sculpture Trust, Neat led the seven-year campaign to erect the Hugh MacDiarmid Memorial Sculpture in Langholm, Dumfries-shire. In 1979 he made a documentary film about the Langholm Common Riding (inspiration for MacDiarmid's masterpiece, 'A Drunk Man looks at the Thistle').

Ian Hamilton Finlay
Neat maintained a collaborative relationship with Ian Hamilton Finlay (poet, artist, intellectual polemicist) for many years. Finlay proved a generous and deeply influential friend.

Students and Artists, Envelopes and Letters
For sixteen years, Neat taught History of Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. He was close to his students, and many of his artist colleagues. Gifts were often exchanged. All the works not by Neat in this exhibition were gifted to him. Letters are part of equally dynamic exchanges.

Sorley MacLean
Widely acknowledged as the greatest poet of the Scottish Gaedhealtacht, Sorley MacLean is a pivotal figure in the history of modern Scotland. Neat's documentary film, 'Hallaig – the Poetry and Landscape of Sorley MacLean', made 1979/84 and introduced by Seamus Heaney, had a major impact on the revival of the Gaelic language and culture.

The Travelling People
Since first meeting 'the Travellers', in Glen Nevis, in 1957, Neat has been fascinated by the lifestyle and cultural riches of this ancient group of Caledonian nomads. Long 'outlawed', Neat has strongly supported their culture and needs. In 1976/77 he made a documentary film 'The Summer Walkers'. In 1996, a book - with the same title - launched Neat's 'Highland Quintet', five books exploring traditional life in the Highlands.

Margaret Gardiner
In 1986 Michael Kustow of Channel 4 commissioned Neat to make a documentary film about the 20th Century writer and Art patron Margaret Gardiner: 'Time is a Country– The Friends and Memories of Margaret Gardiner’. The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, Orkney, remains her memorial.

John Berger
Writer, intellectual, critic, journalist, artist, revolutionary; John Berger has a worldwide reputation. Neat has worked with him since 1978 on various projects, notably on two feature films, 'Play Me Something', 1989, and 'Walk Me Home', 1993.

Bards and Crofters
The historian J.B. Pick once wrote, 'The greatest work of art the Highlanders have produced is themselves', Neat himself expanded this idea in his statement: 'the culture is the lifestyle, the lifestyle is the culture'. Over many years Neat’s writings, photographs, films and drawings have sought to honour the undervalued cultural virtues of rural Scotland.

At Peacock Visual Arts we have been dealing with delicate artworks on a daily basis, for over 40 years. Our staff are trained in securely and professionally packaging a print, ready for shipment all over the world. Firstly, the print is protected by specialist tissue paper. Depending on the size of the print, it will then either be carefully rolled up in a tube or packaged flat using tough cardboard and bubble wrap. Your print will be delivered fully insured. We aim to deliver within 3-5 working days for UK orders, within 7-14 days for European destinations and within 12-24 days for the rest of the world.

If for any reason you are not satisfied with your purchase, please call us first on +44 1224 639539 to return the item within 14 days for an exchange or refund in the form of original payment. The item returned must be packaged in its original way and in saleable condition. Shipping and handling charges are not refundable, unless the print has been lost or damaged in transit (see ‘Damages’ for more info). At Peacock Visual Arts we do our utmost to ensure that every print is sent to you in perfect condition, but we know that occasionally things can get lost or damaged in transit.
